While AI can support many aspects of the dissertation process, it should never replace the researcher’s independent thinking, analysis, or authorship. The key principle is that AI should function as a support tool, not as the creator of the research.
One of the most appropriate uses of AI in a dissertation is for brainstorming and idea development. Doctoral students often use AI to explore possible research questions, refine topic areas, or generate alternative perspectives on a problem. This can be especially helpful in the early stages of dissertation planning when ideas are still forming. However, all final research questions must be selected, refined, and justified by the student based on scholarly literature and supervisor guidance.
AI can also be used appropriately to support literature review development. Students may use AI to summarize complex academic texts, identify key themes, or suggest ways to organize ideas. It can help clarify dense theoretical material and highlight potential connections between studies. However, all sources must be verified independently, and AI should never replace direct engagement with peer-reviewed literature.
Another appropriate use is assistance with writing structure and organization. AI can help students create outlines for chapters, suggest logical flow between sections, or recommend ways to improve clarity in academic writing. This can be particularly useful when organizing large sections such as the literature review or methodology chapter.
